After their disappointing 0-0 draw against Leicester City the Arsenal away section in unity sang "We Want Wenger out." This was just a week after Wenger was attacked in the media for not signing a striker or central defender after their 4-3 loss to Liverpool. So this begs the question, does Wenger deserve this? Or are Arsenal fans wrong?
Why All The Frustration?
Arsenal's last Premier League title was over a decade ago in the season of 2003-04 where they didn't lose a single match. Now, at the start of every season, Arsenal fan have proclaimed "It's time for us to win the league again". And yet it has not happened since. Coming off last season where they came in second behind shock title winners Leicester City, Arsenal fans and pundits said: "Arsenal are one top class striker away to winning the league." They have been linked with Alexandre Lacazette, Gonzalo Higuaín, Karim Benzema and Mauro Icardi. With just over a week until the transfer deadline they are STILL to get any of these players but instead spent 30+ million on ANOTHER midfielder, which gave Arsenal fans hope the money that Arsene Wenger always talks about is finally getting put into the team but it still hasn't.
Does Arsene Wenger Deserve This Treatment?
As a Tottenham fan, I LOVE seeing the turmoil, arguments and even fights between Arsenal fans over the last couple of months. Looking at it in a non-biased way I am shocked to see Arsenal fans treating a man so poorly when he has practically made Arsenal the club they are today. Nowadays in English Football where managers usually stay for three years then move on or get sacked, Wenger should be praised for staying this long. Having a manager who has been with the same team since 1996 is incredible and very impressive to see. He has made players like Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Tony Adams and Robin Van Persie to have amazing careers at the club. He's a manager who does it the right way, is loyal, tries to use the youth system (which is very rare for top clubs) and plays an attractive and attacking style of football that many managers don't.
Who would Replace Him?
Arsenal supporters bring up names like Diego Simeone, Joachim Löw, and even Carlo Ancelotti to replace the French man. But let's be honest: Why would ANY of these managers leave their jobs to join Arsenal? Diego Simeone is the God of Athletico Madrid and is a frequent Champions League favorite. Joachim Löw gets paid millions of dollars to work four months a year with the best International team in the world (Germany). And Carlo Ancelotti just moved to Bayern Munich and even though he doesn't usually stay long at a club, moving to Arsenal would be a step down for him.
To wrap up, Arsenal fans need to remember what happened to Manchester United when Sir Alex Ferguson left them, and they replaced him with a good manager in David Moyes. No matter how good the new manager is losing a club icon and legend who has been at the club 20+ years is a huge transition and will take time. If the last few seasons show anything, Arsenal fans don't have the patience to wait, and now especially since their biggest rival Tottenham has a younger and better squad than them and with a new 60,000 seat stadium coming. It really seems like Arsenal is in danger of being dethroned as North London's largest club.
