As someone who isn't very good at shooting/war games, I spend most of my time playing FIFA and NHL. As the game has been out for several months, I find myself playing NHL a lot less due to the lack of in-game content compared to FIFA. So I will list a few things NHL 18 needs to make it a game you can play all year around.
Online - Skill Competition
This is something people have been asking for a while, obviously, with Madden and FIFA, EA doesn't spend all their time on NHL, but this is so simple. There should be an online mode that you can do a full all-star game-like skills competition (accuracy, stick handling, freestyle shootout, etc). .This might seem small, but it will give players like me who maybe don't like HUT a chance to play more fun online games with friends.
A Real Career Mode
It's time for the NHL franchise to follow in the footsteps of their most successful brother in FIFA and make a real career mode. This means to be able to have your player, negotiate deals, request for trades and most importantly, have international competitions. This is just pure laziness from EA, if they can put the World Cup, European Championships, Copa America, etc in FIFA they can EASILY do it in NHL. To be able to have this it will give players an incentive to play more than one of two seasons as they are motivated by trying to make their countries World Cup or Olympic team. This is something many players have been asking for, and we still haven't got it.
Side Note: Am I the only one who wants post game interviews?
NHL Live Moments
This was a strange move by EA to take out NHL Live Moments as it was another thing that gave the game more legs as you could try to recreate the games of the year AND also compete with your friends. Even though this might be a small move to the overall game play, it will give more causal players more add ons to play and improve their skill.
