As someone who takes pride in my NHL picks, yesterday was rough. Today is a new day with new teams and some new winning streaks to talk about. So without making an introduction that's longer than it needs to be let's get into our picks!
Washington Capitals vs Montreal Canadiens - (+100)
The Washington Capitals go into this game with tied with the longest winning streak in the NHL with five. In these games, they have scored 20 goals and have let in only eight goals with two back to back shutouts (most notably breaking the streak of the Blue Jackets by winning 5-0). Now they go to Montreal and go up against the banged up and injured Canadiens. The home team will be without key players like Andrew Shaw and Brendan Gallagher and other important players like Alex Galchenyuk, Andrei Markov, and Paul Bryon is questionable. With both of these teams having very similar stats both teams will need their top players to step up. Of course, in a game like this you need to look at Alex Ovechkin. He might not be having his greatest season, but in 40 games Ovi does have 22 goals and 19 assists against the Habs. With both Braden Holtby and Carey Price likely to start this will be an extremely tight game but I think the Caps will extend their winning streak.
Over/Under Prediction: Under
Calgary Flames vs Winnipeg Jets - (+106)
Going into this game, we can't start anywhere besides the news that Winnipeg's Patrik Laine will be out indefinitely with a concussion following him getting knocked out against the Buffalo Sabres. If Laine were playing this would be an easy bet, as Laine has scored 15 goals at home and only six away. The Jets though are a different story; they are a pretty poor at home as they are 23rd in the NHL in home form. When going against the Jets, you can't start anywhere besides the debacle that is their goaltending. Connor Hellebuyck and Michael Hutchinson have both contributed to their awful 3.0 goals conceded again (25th in the NHL). The Flames have scored 14 goals in their last five games and against a Jets team without their young super star and poor goaltending choices, I think the Flames will just edge it.
Over/Under Prediction: Over
